Middle of the night, broken down in the Jungle
Trip Start Dec 12, 2007
39Trip End Ongoing
It all started during the day in Oaxaca when the guy that was meant to book us a ticket leaving 7pm didnt and the bus we were meant to catch had just left. He was feeling very guilty, and managed to pull some strings and get someone he knows drive us there in a little minibus / truck. However we only just made that, as we ended up getting lost in the city and having to run a full 20 minutes to the bus terminal to collect our bags. And at that point I then found out the truck was leaving from a location 10 minutes away, so we quickly found a taxi that would take us there and sped off to catch our ride.
The crazy taxi driver just got us there in time, and we chucked our backpacks in the back and hopped in... This is where the fun started! - The truck broke down about 15 minutes out of the town and we had to get a mecanico to come out and fix the truck, which obviously didnt work as the same thing happened again 5 minutes later. There must of been a problem with the radiator or something as he kept filling the engine back up with tap water every time it broke down over the next 20 minutes.
The truck was going good, and we were heading to cross the jungle that lies in between Oaxaca and Peurto Escondido. Not long into the jungle guess what happened - yep it broke down again... and again... and again!! It was starting to get dark, but the driver was determined he'd keep fixing it, filling it back up with water and keep driving?? Where it started to get dangerous was when we broke down several times about an hour into the jungle and very high on the mountain, right on the very edge of a bend with a VERY long drop a few feet away from us. It was pitch black and old trucks and buses were swearving to miss us. Many times he had to run out onto the road with a torch to warn them we were there. A really old bus attempted to pull us out of the way, but ...Once again he managed to fix the bloody truck and we were off. This next time we were about an hour and forty five minutes into the jungle, right up high into the mountains when it broke down! And it just would not start no matter what he did for ages! We sat there for sooo long in the pitch black. He wouldnt give up though, he was determined to get this blasted thing working - which he did eventually and we were off! Thankfully this was the last time the truck broke.
When driving high up on mountain ridges, the moon lit up amazing images of the Jungle valleys extending right till the horizon. We had a couple of stops at small villages a couple of times to get food and water, and i attempted to speak with the locals... Struggling with my Latin Spanish though! The driver was quite fast on the roads trying to make up for lost time speeding in and out of the corners. Twas ok though as it put me to sleep.
I soon woke up noticing something was wrong... Not with the truck this time, but the driver. I dont know how long I was a sleep, but the driver was not behaving normal... He was making really wierd noises constantly, spitting, visciously scratching his head all the time, and swaying all over the road! Every time a corner would come he'd hit the breaks REAL hard and completely sketch out! He did the same everytime a truck coming in the other direction with lights would approach us! - The bastard was so high on drugs! Was bloody scary while we're so high up on mountain ridges. What was I gonna do though? We're smack bang in the middle of the jungle, and there's no way I could drive this thing, and wouldn't want to anyway!! Was actually quite scared and expecting to have a big accident any minute! So... if I'm gonna die i didnt wanna know about it, so I just tried to get about it all and force myself to go back to sleep and forget about that its 1am in the middle of the jungle, with a driver sketching out on smack, nearly running us off the road every time a corner or another car comes. haha!
He soon just stopped the car, and ran off with the door open... great! Now this is quite rediculous! Think he had a few smokes to calm himself down though as he came back ALOT calmer, and drove at his normal crazy fast self again, which got us to our destination in Peurto Escondido!! Which is meant to be a bit of a tropical paradise, but I shall find out in the morning when the sun dawns!
