AFter we met at La Spezia we travelled to Pisa and got to know each other a bit better and had a few laughs. We arrived at Pisa and all checked our backpacks into a locker and headed out to find - you know what... the Leaning tower :oP The trainstation was at 1 end of the city and the tower was at the other end. Which was ok because it gave us an excuse to see the city. The sky was deep blue, and had few clouds while the sun beated down on our necks. Pisa was a pretty small city, so it was very easily walked through. We headed off through the main street where the seemed to be so many young people just going up and back... up and back... with all their 'fashion' sense clothing and big goofy expensive glasses! We kinda stuck out like dogs balls here (more aussie slang) as we're all sweaty, wearing shaggy clothes, sandles are on and walkin through with our day packs
We finally reached the otherside of the city where the tower was located. haha it was so funny looking at this building with so many people standing on the grass area infront it doing a cheesy pose with the action of of pushing against the tower. haha! :o) When looking at this from a distance, Neil mentioned it just looks so much like a postcared and i'd have to agree... Definatly does not look real at all. Its kinda hard believing your actually standing here infront of the.... leaning tower of pisa! Again, something i've always known about my entire life, yet here i am looking at it just as i would look a billboard sign back home. But yet such a fantastic feeling knowing that its actually infront of you though. A bit of history for ya! - The building started to lean while they were still only buliding the 4th story, and yet it has alot more than 4 stories. They noticed the lean, but ignored it and just kept on building up and up. Only untill recent years has the tower finally stopped leaning. This british engineer had to save it from falling. Up untill that point they were baffeled as to how it was actually still standing, as the marble is extremely heavy. The guy that built the tower of pisa, it was his biggest muck up in his entire career, however it is his most famous work, and now one of the most famous buildings in the world. - Absolutely hilaroius :o)
Behind the leaning tower you'll find these beautiful old buildings and cathedrals, unfortunatly the attention is drawn away from these by a big miss-hap :oP ahaha, but deserve some attention if you are ever there. After walking around the local market area there for a bit and grabbing a souviner we grabbed something to eat, which was this absolute delicious calzone thing. Well we weren't really keen on sticking around for too long, as we were up for hitting firenza that night (Florence)... We headed back to the trainstation to grab our packs and off we headed yet again.
The train ride was cool, but happened to stopp in this really really smelly town on the way - was quite hillarious though as we all quickly had to grab our shirts and stick em over our face... That wasn't the best smell - however was the better option. haha! Dont really like to finish diary entries off on something like that - but definatly something that we all cacked up laughing about and sticks in my mind.
