Where I stayed
Phoenix and Palm Springs...

Thanks to a late checkout we had a massive lie in...damn it felt good! I finally got my washing done as well (which I'd been meaning to do since about Vancouver...). We set off about midday down the I-17.

We stopped at a few view points along the way towards Phoenix, it's so  easy to forget that the spectacular natural scenery doesn't end in the national parks. Unfortunately I forgot to take the advice of a guy in Seattle to go through a small town, about 20kms down the road we could see were the town must have been, it looked spectacular! Lesson learned.

Also saw signs for something called Montezuma Castle, it turned out to be a building built up into a cliff around 700ad. We got recommended to go to the Montezuma Well from there, a beautiful circular lake nearby. Unfortunately it was't as well signposted as we expected! 4 miles of dirt track later we ended up back on the interstate. The views along the track were amazing though, Arizona is a pretty stunning state.

We drove through Phoenix in the evening to find a cinema, saw Jackass 3d which was pretty hilarious! I'd highly recommend it if you don't mind seeing vomit and worse in 3-dimensions...otherwise wait for the dvd release...

Coming out of Phoenix we saw loads of wind turbines, it's actually really surprised me how many we've seen, all over America.

The following day saw us cruising along the I10 towards Palm Springs just outside LA. En route we passed along the southern border of Joseph Tree NP and stopped back in for a bit of a wander about. Once again spectacular scenery! Hills and valleys unlike the plains we'd seen on the western side of the park. Driving back down towards the interstate it was easy to see the paths of flash floods through the valleys, wide flat areas with very little vegetation which frequently crossed the road (they even painted the tarmac a different colour where the flash floods crossed, I sure wouldn't want to hang around there in heavy rain!!).

Googlemaps completely screwed us over in Palm Springs which was unfortunate...still we abused the free wifi in Barnes&Noble (having already abused the expensive internet on Kes' iphone far too much...) and found where we were actually supposed to go :-) Once we finally arrived it was time to repack our stuff...God knows how we'd made such a mess in a few short days!! Good team effort all round ;-)

Earlyish start the next day and on to LA proper! Nightmare driving the huge truck back into their little carpark but I successfully ditched it somewhere, caught a cab to LAX and time for Kes to go home, and me to go to Fiji!

I feel a "ps" is important here, I've had a fantastic time in the states, however I have fallen prey to the standard traveller virus. For all that I've seen in this huge, diverse, fantastic country, being here for two months has just made me realise that there's so much more of it yet that I want to see so, yes, I'll be back....
