So...LA! Well not my favourite city but this story starts long short of Sunset Boulevard (conveniently, however, it does end there).

After my first 8 hours on the bus I got into Portland around 4am. Managed to hang around with Bria til about 6am when she got on the bus again, then went to see the sunrise over the river. Got to see another side of the city being up so early, I used some of the last of my cash to get breakfast in subway (still thinking my cashcard had been swallowed in Vancouver). Exploring took me to Powell's City of Books (the largest book store in the world) and then Voodoo Donuts (which had been recommended ever since arriving in the city, they were pretty damn good) which I ate while sitting next to the river again.

I got back on the bus about midday with about 24 hours to LA...funfun! Got chatting to this american guy called, get this, Rocky, brilliant! You meet such random people on greyhound buses. We were pulling out of a service station in the small hours after a rest stop and he wasn't back on the bus, I had to pursuade the bus driver to wait while I went and found him, apparently he normally just leaves them there to catch the next bus a few hours later and hope their luggage is all unloaded and stored for them! Seemed a little harsh to me...

Finally got into LA about midday the next day, way downtown (which is pretty dodgy) in absolute baking heat, with all my stuff, having had about 2 hours sleep in the last 48. Great first impressions of LA...

I had plans to meet up with Kes and a couple of her friends who were over for a holiday and stay with them (they had a hotel room booked already with some spare space). I eventually found my way across town to the hotel and stopped in a nearby starbucks to try and get in touch with Kes (I didn't have a phone). This old lady sat down next to me, started asking about what I was doing (musta looked pretty much like a vagrant sat outside with all my stuff) then asked me where I was staying while I was travelling, looked so relieved when I said hostels...wish now that I'd put on troubled expression and said wherever I can put my head down!

So instead of a doorway, I was in a pretty luxurious hotel with Kes, her friends Bryce and Sandy and their daughter Zayley. And I mean luxury! Right up on Hollywood and Sunset Blvd. We went exploring in the afternoon and ended up in a pizza joint, biggest pizzas on offer were 22inch! I'm unfailingly amazed by American serving sizes.

Had a wonderfully relaxed day before going up to the Universal City Walk in the evening, quite a cool place with live music and loadsa random shops. There was even a vertical wind tunnel with some people trying to float in it.

On the 16th it was time to go and get our car! Pretty excited to be back on the road, un-green as it is a car is a fantastic way to see a country. So we'd paid up for a tiny little eco car, smallest cheapest option on the menu. When we got there they didn't have one available, seeing all 5 of us, they offered us a huge Chevy pick up truck for the same price! Result :-D We drove up the Pacific Coast Highway, then around Santa Monica where we found the end of Route 66 (after driving all the way round a tall multi-story in the monstrous truck...). After that we went down the road to Venice Beach then finished it up with a touristy visit to Wal-mart, unfortunately the road there was closed so we ended up on a little side street slowly getting lost...fine til Bryce noticed the grills covering all the houses windows down the street! And lock the doors...but no LA isn't that bad (except for most parts), just don't stay in LA itself...

PS I should fess up I took very few pics in LA (4 to be precise) so most are stolen from Kes or google...sorry lame I know!
