Made it to Portland successfully! The trip was pretty uneventful except for an old homeless looking guy slamming a younger guys dvd player closed on his fingers, that provided some entertainment at least...

Got a chicken teriyaki meal from a street stall which was so good, true American size portion which was exactly what I needed after such a long trip! I met up with Kes at the Amtrak station (she'd just come down from Seattle) and caught up over pizza and a beer.

Yet another early morning!! We had booked a car to go up north to a place where they housed wolves born into captive situations. It was a really nice place, designed to keep the wolves themselves happy rather than the tourists! It was pretty cool to be driving again as well! Even if it was an automatic and on the wrong side of the road...

What we hadn't realised until we were sat in the rental place was that we were going to be driving past Mt St Helens! Ended up driving right up to it on the way back and got some great views, the devastation around is still clear with splintered tree stumps and fallen trees despite the 30 years that have passed since it erupted. Instead of the forest land that was destroyed, prairies have grown so there's lots of wildlife in the area. We made it to the final view point a bit before the sunset which was brilliant.  Clouds had formed in all the valleys while we'd been at the viewpoint so we drove down into them on the way back, cool but very eerie!

After an incredibly lazy day (managed dinner and a film, The Social Network; very weird to be doing normal things while travelling!) we moved over to a hostel in Hawthorne, the hippy alternative district in Portland. Went for a walk up the main street, endless rows of small independant shops, cafes and bars...not a chain in sight!

We managed a trip by the buses over to Washington Park, took ages but it was really nice when we got there. Explored a little then had a picnic and met Bob mk 2! Vast improvement on the first Bob who kept trying to peck us for food...
