We decided we might as well go for a drive so, as we are not that far from the state line, we headed off to Noccalula Falls in Alabama. The Falls Park is well signposted, but we discovered there was no need to pay to go into the park just to see the falls, we just had to drive a bit further up the road. Of course there were no signs so after a U-turn we finally drove into the Noccalula Falls Campground.
At the office they said 'just go through the gate behind the buidling, you'll see the trail', which we did - the Black Creek Trail. We walked for a mile, but no falls were to be seen, so we turned around and headed back
There is a statue of a young Indian girl at the top of the falls. The legend of Noccalula says that the beautiful daughter of a local Indian Chief fell in love with a young brave, but as he possessed little wordly goods her father arranged for her to be married to the rich chief of a powerful neighbouring tribe. Noccalula was distraught and on the day of her wedding she slipped away from the festivities and jumped from the top of the 90 foot falls. Since that day the falls have been known as Noccalula Falls.
