What I did
Artesia, New Mexico
Our first stop was Artesia, normally somwhere most people would just pass through. We initially stopped because their Visitor Center is the old railway depot but, when I Googled Artesia, we found that the town has a very interesting history. Check out the town web page for more information on our photos and the town, and don't forget to also look at the walking tour brochure to see where we walked.
We continued on to Roswell, which of course has much more history to it than just aliens. After a walk around the town and museum we headed to Bottomless Lakes State Park for a look at the sinkholes. They are amazing.
As we were continuing on our circular tour Cliff spotted a signpost for Dexter. 'We passed a sign for that on the way here' he says, 'we'll go this way'. Soon we were in the middle of nowhere, watching out for cattle again, with me trying desperately to find some indication of a road on the GPS. Next he decided to go straight on rather than follow the road round a bend, onto a gravelled road - where are we?!! But we did see some llamas (or are they alpacas?) which otherwise we would have missed.
As we came back into Carlsbad we took a side road to take us down to the river park. Needless to say we kept crossing the rail track - still no trains - but there in the middle of a roundabout was an old steam engine. Just before we joined the main road again we found Carlsbad rail depot where a couple of engines were standing, but still no signs of anything moving.
It has been extremely windy today. We are supposed to be on the edge of a storm front again, with 30+mph winds and gusts of 60mph forecast; it's amazing how much dust gets in the trailer.
