Well finally the big day had arrived! Months before we'd been assured by our friend, Daniel, that no visit to NYC in this week would be complete without attendance at the world famous Coney Island Mermaid Parade. The pictures will tell the story far better than my words. Will we be returning? Not any time soon.

While at Coney Island - which is sort of like Luna Park in Melbourne without the mouth and the walls - we enjoyed a world famous Nathan's hot dog! You've heard of them, haven't you? They weren't too bad actually if you didn't look! The thousands queuing to get them couldn't be wrong. They were wrong, however, about the world's best crinkle cut fries! They simply are not!! McCain's frozen crinkle cut fries are vastly superior. A walk through the crowds along the world famous boardwalk followed lunch before we decided that departure was the next most crucial thing to achieve ahead, if possible, of the huge crowds.

Finally, having braved the world's worst crowd control, a huge human crush and an almost riot of angry people who were clearly not happy with NYPDs finest, we made it safely to the Q train for a lovely journey across Brooklyn (stopping all stations) and limited express up the island of Manhattan back to the relative sanity and security of West 55th Street.

Change of pace in the evening saw us make our way to a cabaret venue - 54 Below (coincidentally below the world famous Studio 54 - for a delightful dinner and performance by Sheree Rene Scott called Pieces of Meat. Truly entertaining and funny! We had seen her previously in the Broadway musical, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

Big day of mermaids, American culture and great cabaret!

54 Below menu (special request ... No pics, sorry!)
