Where I stayed
Just as Cambodia still has visible scars of recent historical events, so has Vietnam.
This morning, we are off to visit the Cu Chi Tunnels, a big complex of tunnels about 70k north of the city , post more later.
The ride out to cu chi tunnels was almost as much an experience as the tunnels themselves. The traffic is awful, just swarms of scooters everywhere all doing there own thing,, doesn't seem to be any traffic rules, just everyone for themselves.
The tunnel complex was interesting,, although hot and sticky,, its dense jungle after all
Omg!!! the highway code just does not exist here! nor does direction of traffic, nor does fear and nor does any aparent weight limit on the back, front or sides of a moped! and in some instance...the number of people! apparently 3 is the legal amount on 1 moped provided an adult is driving! We've seen entire familys INCLUDING the kitchen sink on 1 moped! Have to say its really scarey...they just get on the bike and go...all my nursing insticts were just screaming at me when i saw tiny babies and little kids..with no helmets!! just stood on the seat inbetween 2 adults. It is a sight that everyone needs to see to be believed :-) anyway...back to the tunnels..they are incredible..human inginuity and the need the survive show them selves so clearly here...people fight hardest for their homes and for a feat of engineering in their own right, they are very clever. You can actually go down a tunnel (only with a guide now as about 5 years ago some American got lost down there...was wandering around for ages apparently! He had to be rescued :-) ) and john, being the big brave man, went down. Me..now...the idea of tiny little tunnels that you cant stand up in and have no idea where you are going is just not my idea of fun! :-) Bit like pot-holing...what the hell is the point in that???!! :-)
Anyway...its hot and sticky everywhere here, and im not really feeling Saigon..but its a vibrant alive city that seems to be finding its feet in the world again.
Take care all
