On Sunday I spent the day with Doņa Norma and her family.  She is the cleaning lady at our school and the sweetest little lady you could ever meet.  Her and her family are very poor so it was very generous for her to have Toby, Mel, Adrienne, and me over for lunch AND dinner!  She lives with seven of her grandchildren, two of her daughters, and her husband.  The 11 of them share two rooms with six beds.  Cleaning at the school she earns 3,000 L per month, or $150.  I earn 2,000 L per month and get better benefits than she does and I am considered a "volunteer".  I cannot imagine raising such a large family on that kind of income.  One of her sons is in the US so I assume he sends money home and one of her daughters is "lost" in the US, meaning that she left and never came back to take the responsibility of her children.

We had stewed chicken with potatoes over rice and corn tortillas for lunch.  We spent the afternoon playing outside with the kids.  Her daughter, Claudia, taught us how to make flour tortillas and we cooked them over a wood burning stove and had baleadas for dinner.  They were very gracious hosts!
