Today after school I went to Marie´s house like I usually do, but today the gate was locked. I hollerd in to her mother and sister who live next door and I ended up hanging out with them all afternoon instead. (I think the baby was sick and they had to go to San Pedro). Her sister is 25. Right away she offered me a topogigo, which is similar to a popsickle but served in a baggie. I had a cornflakes and milk topogigo and got to watch her mother make them. People come up to her gate to buy them and she also sells ice.
Then, she made me a plate of two tamales that were the best I have ever had. A tamale is shaped like a burrito but made out of corn flour, chicken, vegetables, and other misc items and cooked in a big plantain leaf.
We continued to hang out and it was a good Spanish lesson for me. My comprehension is decent but I can only say about 5% of what I want to say. Maybe even less in reality. She took me out in their back yard to look at all of their flowers and fruit trees. They have a lot of mangoes, avocados, oranges, and some fruit that I have never seen before. I cannot recall the name either. There were a few ripe ones at the top that she could not reach with her big stick. I climbed up in the tree (They thought I was a monkey, but I love to climb trees!) and she passed me the stick and got four of them down. They are big, red and yellow, and have a huge seed protruding from the top. I am pretty sure I have seen the seed used as a bead, so I saved them. She ended up sending me home with a huge sack of produce. The mangoes will not be ripe until April but it is popular to eat them green with salt. I tried it earlier and liked it. Everything is in bloom around here. The colors are beautiful but I know that it is leading to a viscious summer- March and April...
I took the odd fruit over to the small house on my way home because they have a blender. She instructed me to make liquados (smoothies) by adding water, ice, and sugar. We followed her advice and drank them down. It was interesting more than it was good. It had a strange texture that Adrienne described as "eating human flesh". Toby and I ate them anyway. While we were there Anne came home with a huge package from her mom. She got books, kids books, stickers, and conversation hearts. She was very generous with her goods so we were all happy!
If there is a poor man among your brothers in any of the towns of the land that the LORD your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward your poor brother. Rather be openhanded and freely lend him whatever he needs. Deuteronomy 15:7-8
