We were pleased to get out of Vientianne after our ailments had kept us there for 8 days and even happier to find that the sleeper bus to Pakse (10 hours) had beds on it.  We were given blankets and pillows and free water and the on board loo was even totally acceptable and non stinky, a rareity on asian 'VIP' busses.  We were even brought some steamed pork buns and sweet custard buns for dinner.  The following morning however we were not as happy as unless you lye on your back you get rolled around a lot on a bus bed, especially when the driver is driving at speed and swinging around corners, which is fine for me but no so fine for taller peeps.  So we arrived in Pakse pretty tired.

We checked into a grotty but overpriced hotel, the Langkham which was not as clean as you would hope and they annoyed us by insisting they didnt have fan rooms available and we had to pay for an aircon room when there was a huge ceiling fan in the room.  We were determined to only stay one night in Pakse so after a brief rest we sought out a tuk tuk and headed off to Champasak to visit Wat Phou ancient Khmer ruins.

The drive there and back was awesome, through fields and villages and it was great to be back in the countryside again after so long in cities. On arriving in Champasak we immediately regretted not heading straight there and staying there.  A small town surrounded by mountains and fields and peaceful and laid back if we were to come again we would stay here and miss out Pakse for sure.

We wandered around the ruins and pretended to be indiana jones and lara croft and then headed back to Pakse very much looking forward to heading out to Si Phan Don (4000 Islands) the next day.
