Sucre is the offical capital of Bolivia and is SUCH a gem. I have no clue why so many people skip it! It is beautiful, peaceful, and was absolute heaven after my week in dirty, noisy La Paz. Most things seem to be closed for the weekend, or at least on Sunday, but I don't mind at all. It was perfect weather almost the entire time, which I spent exploring the market, relaxing on the hotel terrace, and visiting churches, the dinnosaur tracks, some museums, and a very impressive, ornate cemetery. Not only did I decide to fly to Sucre (rather than take a 14-hour night bus) after getting sick in La Paz, but I also decided to put myself up in a four-star hotel, which was INCREDIBLE
I also met a middle aged French man (probably one of the most interesting people I have met) named Juan. Well, his real name is Jean-Jacques but in South America people call him Juan, and we spoke spanish the entire time we hung out together. He has several houses (one in Cuba, one in Brazil, one in France), and spends most of the year in his chateau in the south of France. We were both staying in the same hotel, and ended up sharing a cab together from the airport. We wandered around town a bit, and ended up grabbing dinner together later on. And in case you were wondering, no, it was not at all sketchy, even though I did find out after asking how he can live in a 25-bedroom castle by himself that he essentially runs an international, invitation-only swingers joint ("intercambio"). He gets lots of Germans and Dutch apparently. Hm...interesting!
