I finally made it to Perth proper last week. It's a really beautiful city. The botanical gardens are positioned in such a way so you get a sweeping view of the skyline and the Swan River. Ashley, Colin (our little friend from Oxford) and I had a great time wandering about, and then tried to go to an Indian restaurant but it was closed. We went back on Tuesday because this restaurant is pay-what-you-want. So theoretically it could be free. Of course we gave them some money, despite the lack of naan bread.

Last week Ash and I went on a night tour of the Fremantle Prison, which was built by the inmates who were going to end up being stuck there. Sounds a bit cruel to me. The facility was also quite cruel by modern standards, but they only shut the prison down in 1991, which amazed me, because the cells were 2m x 2m. They hanged 43 people there, the last one being in the 60s. The tour scared me, especially when my camera picked up a ghostly-looking creature. Check out the picture to see if you think it's a ghost (on the left.)

Last night the hostel held a "Pimp and Ho" party. It took surprisingly little convincing to get Nik and Greg to dress in drag. They turned out surprisingly well.

I'm currently doing a shift as night manager of the hostel, so I'm taking advantage of the computer in the office. There's not much going on, since most people are recovering from last night. In exchange for doing nothing except for a couple of dishes, I get a free night's accommodation. And as I've discovered, 'free' is a backpackers favourite word (especially when combined with 'beer').
