What I did
Thundering Creek Falls, Blue Pools, Queenstown
Then off to the next beauty spot, the Blue Pools. This was a magical spot where the water is the most beautiful blue and so clear that you can see the brown trout swimming in the river from the suspended bridges.
Enjoyed our lunch of tomato, avocado, cheese sandwiches on bakery bread on the shores of Lake Wanaka, at a beautiful picnic site with an overflowing toilet.
Stunning trip through the mountains culminating in a lookout overlooking two turquoise lakes, Wanaka and Hawea. Stopped at the VIC in Wanaka, at the bottom of Lake Wanaka to ask about campgrounds and the best route to Queenstown. They advised that the shortest way was the Crown road, which is scenic but well-paved, and it was best to check for accomodation in Queenstown itself.
Made it to Queenstown late afternoon, decided after finding a parking space and going to the visitors centre that we weren't remotely interested in staying there any longer than necessary. It was jam packed with tourists, and the recommended campgrounds were big, so probably similar to Akaroa. So, headed south along Lake Wakatipu for Kingston Motels and Holiday Park, which is a lovely spot on the bottom of the Lake with a small creek running through it, and nicely landscaped sites.
