Montevideo was a bit of a shock after peaceful Colonia! A very busy city, with an obvious rich and poor divide. We stayed in a central hostel in a beautiful colonial building, and we even had a balcony in our room, albeit overlooking the homeless.
Sepnt an afternoon exploring the historic centre (once again we seemed to end up in the slum district!), and then a day in the park and walking along the promenade beside the sea and beaches. Unfortunately on the other side of the promenade is a dual carriageway and so it was not as scenic as it could be! Not that impressed with Montevideo, however, great to have on flips flops and finally take off our wooly hats!
On Sunday, we caught a 4 hour bus to the seaside resort of Punta Del Este, the top holiday destination for Urguay and half of Argentinia. We found the resort to have beautiful beaches on either side of the peninsula on which it sits, but it was somewhat spoiled by high rises. However, as we were still in low season, the beaches were fairly quiet, and the high rises all appeared empty. There was also a small working harbour, and we watched the fisherman selling fish directly from the boats, surrounded by sea lions waiting for the scraps!
Had a lovely day in sunny Punta Del Este, and caught the bus back to Montevideo where we were to sail back to Buenos Aires once more the following day..........
