Last night was my first community feast. I was give two packages of noodles, a block of cheese, and three different coloured peppers and told to make pasta salad. Other teachers made potato salad, mashed potatoes, stuffing, Caesar salad, green salad, or cooked a ham or a turkey. There were buns and butter, and the Foods classes made caribou soup and lots of different kinds of desserts. All the food was supplied by the school (much through donations). Chairs were set out all over the gym and tables were laden with food. The teachers helped serve and later the Cadets took over so we could eat. People sat about balancing paper plates on their knees and enjoying the food. During the meal there was a slide show made up of photos of past students. I certainly recognized the fathers of a couple of my students!
I moved about the crowd socializing and got to meet the new Foods teacher who begins work this week. She arrived this weekend, but the school decided it was not fair to plop her into a Feast for her initiation! She came to Inuvik with her husband and three little children. This woman will have her hands full - but she seems really lovely and high-spirited and I am sure she will handle it all well.
My boots made the snow squeak all the way home. It's really winter.
