The 9th was a day of trying to see the places I had missed as tomorrow I am taking a bus trip out of the city.
I ate at another restaurant recommended by the hotel staff. Boccanegra. Very good food. I sat next to a couple from Arlington, VA. He is 60 and was in real estate development until about a year ago and decided to get out while there was still time. He had a lot of friends in the theater world and is now a producer. I can't remember the name of the last play he produced but it was nominated for 4 Tony's. He has a play starting in November called "A catered Affair" with Harvey Firestein. There is another ply in the works based on a newly found manuscript by Mark Twain. He said it is very funny. It is called "He Is Dead"
On the 10th, I took a double decker bus to Siena. The bus was very comfortable and smoothe. It was 1:20 trip. When I got off of the bus I as a young woman from the bus if she knew which way to go. We wound up walking around together for about 2 hours, having lunch and then we went on our separate ways. She is a recent law school graduate from England. She is Italy studying Italian for a month before her solicitor's job begins.
I went to the stop to get the bus to return. By the time the bus came there where about 150-200 people and it was beginning to drizzle. The bus was lousy and apparently had no shocks as it was very bumpy. I sat next to a woman from SF. Her husband and daughter where farther back in the bus.
Traffic was heavy and it took 2.5 hours to get back.
I went back to the hotel and started the computer to download my shots from the day and then went down the street to have dinner. There was a line but the family from SF was there and asked me to join them.
I have been so fortunate to have been meeting the nicest and friendly people.
A couple of observations-you don't get your check when you are finished with your meal. You get it when you ask for it. Very nice no rush to get you out for the next person---everyone seems to be happy-I saw one couple arguing in Venice---Girls an women and men walk down the street hand in hand or arm in arm.---not gay, just best friends.
Today 9-10 was a travel day to Sestri Levante between Cinque Terra and Portofino. I took a train to Pisa and spoke with a young couple from 40 mile north of London. They told me amazing facts about the costs of things. They have a 2 bedroom apartment (condo) that is about 800 sf and costs $325000. A Ford F210 pickup is $40000. Gas is about $10. And we complain.
Then a train from Pisa to here talking to a young couple from San Diego who sold their condo right before market dropped and are living is a small apartment in La Jolla. I showed her how to do some things with her new digital camera.
The country side from the train was interesting and then all of a sudden we went into an extremely long tunnel and when we came out---the Mediterranean coast. Beautiful.
That's all for now.
A happy and healthy New Year to those of the faith and my best to you all.
