This morning we left Anchorage for our next stop, Chickaloon. Chickaloon, AK is just outside of Palmer, AK on the way to Valdez (our next stop for tomorrow). I won't say what we did for breakfast, because we have had some critical comments from some of our readers about how focused we are on food. But I will tell you we, except for woosey Ron :) :), had our first taste of reindeer sausage. And --- it didn't taste like chicken - it tasted like kielbasa.
We then visited a musk ox farm along the way to Chickaloon. It was a guided tour (which was narrated by our NBF, Tyler). Tyler was very knowledgeable for someone who had only worked there for three weeks. This not-for-profit farm is dedicated to helping the locals knit scarves, and hats which go for hundreds of $$$'s. These animals get very huge. What upset us was the fact that the babies are separated from their mothers after about three months, and never get to be near them again. Sometimes they give a holler to each other. The guide said this helps them to be more gentle and not be aggressive.
We then continued on our travels, going through some really beautiful terrain. The mountain tops were covered with snow. We arrived at the Matanuska Glacier. This glacier goes to the Chugach Mountains and is about 2 miles wide. This glacier has remained fairly stable for the past 400 years- so it hasn't been affected by global warming.
We continued on to the Sheep Mountain Lodge, which was really nice. We did have dinner there (you'll just have to guess what we had), but guess what??? We saw our first view of wildlife out of captivity. There were three Dall Sheep skipping along the mountain tops. Dall sheep are white with horns - pretty neat. Afterwards we continued back to our B&B for a night of relaxation. But there is no TV here for our urban travelers.
We were told there is moose and bear in the woods surrounding our B&B, so we are on RED alert for those bears. We'll keep you posted. Until tomorrow - we wish you a good night from the land of the "Midnight Sun."
