I met Mike McEwen after drinking a pony keg, while on a panty raid of a sorority house, in Chico Ca during my first weeks at college. We pledged Theta Chi together during the spring of 1982. We were best friends through college and after. He was best man at my wedding and I at his.

Mike has got the cancer and he and his family were the benificiaries of the 2007 Friendship Paddle.

After spending the nite at Amandas in SLO I drove down to Mirmar beach and parked the Van. Mary came roaring up in a huge RV and we all drove to Bixby ranch, just south of Jalama Beach, near Point Conception. It was a great afternoon. Went surfing at the point, flew the trainer kite as the sunset and ate killer chicken burritos! We had a party, and howled at the almost full moon, camped the nite and woke up at 5:30 am, broke down camp and headed out to the beach.

A prayer was said before embarking on the 46mile, 12 hour, paddle to Mirmar Beach, where Mikes familys beach house is located. This is also the place that Linda and I spent our Honeymoon 24 years ago.

Now paddling is extreme, I mean extremely.....boring, but hanging out on a boat cruising at 3-4 mph along the coast with Mikes friends and family was awsome.  Scott (mikes cousin), stack, Heather, Jeff, Jimmy, Marys two brothers (Wille and ?), Andy, etc.

Mike did not really like all the attention, but really felt the love and support. It was good to see and connect with his mom, dad, Allison and the whole clan.

Criag, you were hilarious on that to look at those pictures. I will never forget you acting like you were paddleing on top of the boat while we were passing all the other boats!

Looks like you had one killer trip out in Santa Barbara! One of my favorite cities for sure and though I haven't spent much time out on the sea there, whale watching counts for something the few times I've gone! Beautiful city and I bet a paddle out was awesome there, they have some excellent surf.I was there a few years back and actually going this upcoming summer for some wine tasting and time in the sun, I am far too pale! My friends and I are planning on staying at the South Coast Inn ( Close to the beach and downtown!
