Missed our first train cos we realised it wasn't regional (we were cheap and had the Bayern ticket) so we arrived a little bit later than planned, around 11 or so but the day was gorgeous! Blue skies, fresh air surrounded by the alps! What a welcome. The initial impression of the place wasn't so wonderful but that was because the train station was completely under renovation while the area around the station was really nothing special. Once we hit towards the old town though, things really started to pick up
After lunch we continued through the altstadt (old town) and saw the Salzburger Dom (The Salzburg Cathedral) which was amazing just for all the ornate carvings inside. Outside and all around the town there are just amazing baroque buildings and churches everywhere and the small shopping streets with the courtyards in between were also very cool to walk around it. As we made our way up to the Salzburg castle we got this wonderful panoramic view over the entire city, it really was something with the backdrop of the blue skies and all. We decided against going into the castle since we would have to pay quite a bit for a 1 hour visit so we went to the Nonnberg Abbey which was featured in the Sound of Music instead =D And it really was! We saw the gates where the nuns turned the kids away and the place where the Vontrapp family hid
When we did eventually come back down is was dusk and everything was bathed in a pink glow which was kinda cool. Enjoyed the town a little bit more, walking through it at night time...was a completely different feel and I'm afraid to say, not an entirely fantastic change. Everything was still wonderful but like a lot of old touristic towns (especially in the old town centre) there wasn't much to see/do at night and I think in that respect, Salzburg could be a little bit limited
And that's all, took the train back Munich and had a nice long sleep dreaming about the Sound of Music and the alps...I assume =P. My advice, go to Salzburg, really...even for a day trip, just go and enjoy the sights I cannot recommend it more highly. You get to see an amazing historic town, some awe inspiring views of the alps and great Austrian food, all in one little walkable town. Sure the night life prob ain't that great but really, if you're in Salzburg, you're there for some bloody awesome sights. Oh and if you have time, you can catch some of the many concerts going on around town! Wunderschön =D
