I got into Lima, Peru yesterday.  A long set of flights, got overcharged on the taxi ride, and now I'm here.  I'm staying in Miraflores which is one of the nice neighborhoods where most of the hostels are.  Apparently the center of Lima is dangerous and there are tons of thieves and robbers.  Not really all that appealing, but Miraflores is quite nice.

It was only until recently that I really learned that Lima was not in the mountains.  Up until a couple of months ago, I always had the impression that Lima was tucked away somewhere in some luscious green valley at some high altitude.... wrong.  Lima is actually right on the coast and I am only a few blocks from the ocean.  And there is surfing......  hhhhmmm, I will be back.

I find that most of the time I don't even know what I will do in the country until I arrive there, open up the guide book and do a bit of reading.  In Peru I knew that I would be doing Machu Pichu, checking out some of the cool towns during Semana Santa (Easter), and visiting Patrick and Angela on the northern coast (two friends from Austin that are in the Peace Corps down here).  Other than that, I wasn't really sure.  Turns out Peru has more to offer than just Machu Pichu (you would never know it since thats all that people talk about).  The plan is to go do some wine tasting, go sandboarding (snowboarding on sand dunes), hike some volcanoes, hop into the jungle for a bit, and potentially ride the Amazon into Brazil (one of my ideas if the whole ski resort thing in Argentina doesn't work out).

Right now, I'm just killing time.  I got in on Wednesday and Chelsea doesn't come in until Friday.  I can't believe that I still have to wait a day to see her, I'm dying over here.  What the hell am I gonna do when she is gone!?

I walked around Miraflores a bit, walked to a nice overlook of the beach, checked out the South American Explorers Club (interesting concept), and did a bit of reading.  Just killing time.  Lima doesn't seem to have that much, I would way rather be in a small town in the country, you don't come to Peru for Lima.
