After many months of preparations all of our things were moved out of the house and into storage today.  We had packed about 70% of it over the past few weeks and on Monday a team of 2 people came to continue the packing and then came back on Tuesday with another person to finish.  At midday another man showed up towing a portable elevator on the back of his van.  The moving truck was backed down the narrow street, which was closed for the afternoon, and they started loading.

Because of the steep narrow stairs and large windows which are typical of canal houses, the boxes are moved out through the windows and not down the stairs.  They started by positioning the elevator at the third floor window, unloaded everything from that floor, then repositioned the elevator on the 2nd floor, emptied it, then again on the 1st floor.  Only the bikes were carried out the ground floor door.

It was fascinating to watch these guys pack what was left.  The team was very professional and gave us every confidence that are belongings will come out intact at the other end.  Plus they were just nice guys.

Now the house feels a bit cavernous.  It is so empty.  We are using folding chairs at the kitchen table and leftover moving boxes for coffee tables.  We still have some cleaning up to do, but the hard work is done and we now have 8 days to relax and enjoy Amsterdam.  We'll be working our way through our favorite restaurants, going back to a few museums, and generally just soaking up the atmosphere as much as possible.

We're both feeling a bit melancholy at the moment.  We're excited about starting this new phase of our lives but also sad to be leaving our current life behind.  We've made some terrific memories these last 8 years and look forward to making new ones back in the U.S.
