Hi everybody!

Today was a fun day full of celebrations in the neighborhood - a food festival and the 25th anniversary of the best beer store in Amsterdam.

de Bierkoning - 25 years

De Bierkoning (The Beer King) is an amazing beer store very close to Dam Square in Amsterdam.  It is small, but packed to the rafters with a selection of beers from all over the world, including aged Belgian beers that are very difficult to find.  This week they celebrated their 25th anniversary by inviting elite brewers to bring beers to the store for sampling.  Throughout the week the best Dutch brewers were on hand to give away samples.  Today, 3 of the best new breweries in the world were on hand.

Revelation Cat, from Rome, had a terrific West Coast IPA.  Yes, a California beer from an Italian Brewer.  Amazing!  Brew Dog, from Scotland, came with a double IPA which was brewed in collaboration with the masterbrewer at Mikkeller, the third brewer at the Bierkoning today.  Mikkeller, from Denmark, brought 2 beers - a lambic that even Melanie liked and a coffee and smokey bacon stout that Chris found to be really good.  Several Dutch brewers were also on hand, sampling the competition.
To add to the festivities, there was a game to "test your beer knowledge with the beer chest."  For one euro one is given a taste of a beer and has to choose which one, of 10 shown in the chest, it is.  If correct, you get to try another.  This continues until a  miss.  We didn't try it, but had fun watching.

Food Festival
The street around the corner from us was closed down today for a New Food Festival.  There are several nice restaurants and unusual food stores on the street and many of them put out special foods for the day.  One restaurant had oysters and prosecco.  Another had a roasted pig that was sliced and made into beautiful sandwiches with olive oil and roasted tomatoes.   There were samples of all sorts of things including pea soup with mint at one place.  We tasted a few things, including some hams and cheeses and a saffron mousse with rose petals before heading over to Bierkoning.  After the Bierkoning, we came back again and noshed our way through dinner.  The weather was beautiful and it was really nice to be able to be outside and just enjoying the neighborhood.
