Hi everybody,
Melanie has been traveling a lot for work this year and during this week she went to Brussels for 2 days of meetings and was lucky when Chris decided to take the train down and join her.  We've been to Brussels many times, but always have stayed around the Grand Place.  This time we stayed at a hotel close to the office where Melanie was working.  It turned out this was close to EU headquarters and a very interesting neighborhood that we hadn't previously explored.

Chris arrived on Thursday night and we took a stroll over to the EU HQ - a sleek modern building with lots of curves.  On the way we passed through Luxembourg square where we saw many young adults enjoying the summer evening with friends and a beer.  This was followed by a walk past the palace to the Grand Place - a place that we cannot miss when in Brussels despite having seen it so many times by now.  The guild halls from the 1500s and 1600s never cease to delight us with their ornate facades.  This was the first time we had been there, though, with no event happening in the square.  It was nice to see people just "hanging out".  Tourists taking pictures, college students sitting in circles on the cobblestones, people enjoying the outdoor cafes...all made for a very relaxed and comfortable feeling.

After the Grand Place, we headed back to the hotel, stopping for a drink, fries and dessert at Kwint, a lovely cafe overlooking the lower city, a formal garden, and a very interesting clock.  It was a hot evening and the breeze on the hill was especially refreshing.

On Friday, Chris visited a museum, visited a nice park and had fries at "the best" fry stand in Brussels while Melanie spent the day in meetings.  After a really nice dinner at Poivre & Sel, a small Italian restaurant with a French twist located just down the street from our hotel, we boarded the train for the quick ride back to Amsterdam.  This was a quick break for us, in a familiar city, but we enjoyed it nonetheless.  This year we are really relishing the freedom that Chris has to join Melanie when she is away for work (not always, but at least sometimes).  It makes the need to be away far less lonely for both of us.
