You may have noticed that we haven't been posting many travelogues lately. This is probably down to many reasons, including:
1) Living here has become more normal than it was 4 years ago. Our day to day life just doesn't seem as special or interesting as it once was now that we've settled in.
2) With that, our electronic photo album has taken on the state of many people's physical photo albums. We've got lots of photos to get organized and uploaded - and we'll get to that "someday"! Somewhere along the way creating a record of our every trip took back seat to day to day life
So, for the first time in quite some time, here's a general update on how life in Amsterdam is going.
We had a beautiful spring this year with lots of visitors. Queen's day was lovely and May was beautiful as well. Chris' mom and many friends were here for Queen's Day and we had a blast drinking champagne on the stoop. Then in June autumn returned. We've had a wet, gray summer with hardly any good boating days and absolutely no hot weather at all. This is by far the worse weather of any summer since we've been here.Although statistically warmer than normal, this was hard to notice since there were few sunny days and lots and lots of rain.
At the same time, Melanie's company is the target of an acquisition battle. A large British bank and a Consortium of Scottish, Belgian and Spanish banks are fighting to buy what is left of ABN AMRO after it sold the Chicago franchise to Bank of America. On Oct 1 most of the US employees will become Bank of America employees, although global operations, of which Melanie is a part, will remain with ABN AMRO.
What does this all mean for us? Well, we don't know anything for sure, but in all likelihood we will not be staying in Amsterdam beyond first quarter next year. Sometime in the 4th quarter we should know which company or companies will be buying the remainder of the bank but it could still take some time before we know what that means for us personally.
In July there were already many layoffs in New York and Chicago and many more are expected in the coming months. It is strange to think that many of those who remain will be working for another company soon and that Melanie will not likely be working with people whom she has known and woked with for nearly 20 years. Although, it's a small world so anything is possible!
In the meantime we have again embarked on lots of weekend travel. We want to make the best we can of the remaining time we have here and enjoy it while we can... whatever the weather!
