Schiphol airport closed all except 1 runway and many planes were cancelled. The following morning we had a 8:30 a.m. flight to Dublin and were concerned about how well the airport would be operating. There was so much backlog that no incoming planes were allowed to land until mid-day in order to allow time for the backlog of planes that had been stuck there overnight to leave.
But, we did make it to Dublin - only 3 hours late. Good thing because the evening after we left, it was -4 F which was the coldest it has been in the Netherlands in the last 50 years!
While some people hoped that the snow and chill would permit the "Elfstedentocht", the famous Eleven Cities, 125-mile ice-skating canal race, the weather didn't remain cold long enough. Weather hasn't permitted that to happen in many years.
