This entry is for those of you curious about some of the variations between life in the U.S. and life here in Burundi.  I've begun to realize that although things look quite different here, similarities sometimes sneak up in unexpected forms.
Washing machines: I have to admit that our house manager washes the majority of the clothing for us, but when we find it necessary to wash some of our own garments, we each have our own personal laundry facility.

Gated communities:  Most houses in what we would consider "middle class" neighborhoods here have solid concrete walls with gates for security reasons, but some areas go one step further and set limits on who has permission to even drive into the neighborhood.  Although not shown in the picture, this "gate" is manned by guards who open and close it for those entitled to enter.

Pest Control:  All right, so this picture isn't very clear, but for those of you who know me well, you understand why this is the best picture I could get of the gecko that came to visit my room, and yes, it really was that tiny.  It's impossible to get any better shot than this when you refuse to step off the bed to get closer to the sneaky little creature.  After sustaining dozens of mosquito bites on my feet during the past several days, however, I am beginning to realize that perhaps I should invite the gecko back for a snack.

Air Conditioning:  When it's 85 degrees every day of the year, this is all that's necessary.

Movie Theater:  I've discovered that there actually is a real movie theater in Burundi and that it's only about a mile away, but my housemates and I have found a way to create our own movie-going experience on our very own rooftop using only a laptop, portable speakers, and microwave popcorn sent from home.

Did I miss something?
I love your sense of humor when you title your photos! I'm a bit confused, however, because the last I knew you were living with a family. Now you seem to be living with some of the other volunteers? How about filling us in and introducing them?

Good to hear from you again.

P.S. Geckos don't bite.

Pest Control
Your comments on your photos are most amsusing! Maybe if you invited your little exterminator to movie nights he'd eat a few more bugs for ya.

Be well.
