I'm officially on the river Amazon after a crazy bus journey through the states of Matto Grosso and Para. Saw the Amazon for the first time today as it merges with the river Tapajos in front of town. The waters of the rivers are a different colour and they run parallel for many kilometres before fully mixing together. This phenomena is caused by the different densities of water due to temperature variations, it's an impressive sight.
Not much to do in Santarem, did go and inspect the passenger slow boats which ferry people up and down the rivers. I'm planning to take several of these slow boats to the source of the Amazon in Peru. Wanted to know what expect, they don't look so bad to be honest. Walked around the city for the reminder of the day just observing life by these mighty rivers. Saw a floating Shell petrol station on the river which looked the same as it's dry land counterpart, a funny sight. Watched the equatorial sun go down on the river front at the point where these two majestic south American rivers meet, a nice way to end my first day on the Amazon river.
