Florianopolis to Rio de Janeiro - Day 39
Jan 31, 2008
Where I stayed
On the Bus
When I arrived in Florianopolis, I thankfully only had a 3 hour wait at the station for a connecting bus to Rio de Janeiro which is another long slog for 18 hours. I'm hoping when I reach Rio tomorrow morning I'll be able to find a seat on a bus to Salvador. This maybe tricky as carnival is quickly approaching, fingers crossed!!
We had a long 2 hour delay on the motorway an hour after leaving Florianopolis. This was the highlight of the day. Absolutely nothing else to report, what can I say, I sat on a bus all day.
Arrived in Florianopolis close to midday after a very comfortable 15 hour bus ride from Chuy on the Uruguayan border. This first bus ride is only the start of my mammoth overland journey to Salvador. I've decided this year not to take any flights in South America. I made this decision for a couple of reasons, firstly from January 2008 to January 2009, I'd taken 41 flights!! This is not good for the environment or my bank balance, also I think travelling overland gives you a different feeling and perspective of a country as you peer out of the dirty bus window. So I'm going too give it a go and resist the temptation of flying. There maybe one or two exception's to this pledge. I may visit Easter Island and the Galapagos which will certainly require a plane journey. First we'll have to see if my budget stretches that far. Both are extremely expensive excursions but would be amazing places to visit.
