This afternoon we flew to Queenstown via Christchurch. We're carrying 26kg each in our backpacks which we confirmed on the scales at the airport, ouch!

The first flight was delayed and we only had a half an hour to play with to catch our connecting flight. We spoke to the flight attendant about our predicament on the first flight and he spoke to the pilot who arranged for our second flight to wait for us until we made our transfer from Christchurch. Lucky really, because there were no remaining flights to Queenstown today.

Great snow capped mountain views as we approached Queenstown. A beautiful landscape of glacial valleys, lakes and snow capped peaks. Everyone has been telling me how awesome the south island is and now I'm about to find out for myself.

Went to a nice restaurant tonight, last decent meal before 8 days of dehydrated food and rice. Had a beautiful fillet steak with asparagus and pepper sauce. Followed by a trip to the local fancy ice-cream joint for a "Chocolate Volcano", basically the largest, most sickly desert they had on the menu. Need to stockpile those calories before we set off tramping tomorrow.

Staying at the Hippo lodge tonight perched on a small hill in the centre of town. Will defiantly enjoy my last night in civilisation, I have bed and shower which I better take advantage of before 8 days of wilderness living.
