Where I stayed
In my car somewhere
Arrived at the docks in Airlie Beach early this morning to catch the boat to the Whitsunday Islands. I've opted for the ReefJet which is a fast catamaran, would have been nice to take one of the traditional sailing boats but I haven't got enough time really for a 2 or 3 day trip, plus this type of excursion is pretty pricey.
After boarding the boat we first headed for a snorkelling spot close to the largest of the Whitsunday's. Had an hour to swim amongst the coral reefs and multicoloured marine life. To be honest not the best reefs I've seen on my travels. The water was rather milky, I think the corals were spawning. Effectively I was swimming in coral sperm, nice!
Then we dropped anchor in Tongue Bay and waded through the waters to reach an island beach. Walked up to an amazing lookout overlooking the beautiful Hill inlet and the pure white sand bars surrounded by turquoise waters
We then rounded off the day at the famous Whitehaven beach, an idyllic stretch of coastline which is renowned for being the finest white silca powder-sand on the planet. The beach stretches for 6km along one side of the island. I sat on a piece of drift wood on the beach far away from the other tourists and contemplated about my past and future Australian adventures.
Returned back to Airlie Beach in the early evening and had a night drive to 20km north of a town called Marlborough. It will be a 550km morning drive tomorrow to reach Hervey Bay which is the best place to book a trip to Fraser Island. The biggest sand island in the world and a UNESCO world heritage site.
