I wanted to do a big hike today, but I just haven't got the time for a 15km hike to see the most spectacular of the gorges at Nitmiluk National Park. I've taken the quick and easy option instead to join a boat tour to a couple of gorges including the most spectacular of all, the 2nd gorge.
The powerful Katherine river carved this enchanting gorge system through the sandstone during massive periodic floods. In the wet season the water level can rise over 30 metres above where it currently sits. The boat meandered down river for 2 hours with the cliffs towering above, vegetation pouring over the gorge rim like organic waterfalls. A really stunning place!!
I'd driven 600km south today before settling down for the night just north of Tennant Creek. I'm sleeping at the half way point between Katherine and Alice Springs in a lay-by somewhere off the Stuart highway. Nothing around me for miles once again.
