Day 164 - 04/08/08

Relaxed this morning and most of the afternoon in my nice hotel room. The hotel let me check-out at 3pm rather than 12 noon which was great as I didn't need to leave for the airport until 3.30pm. I fly to country number sixteen this evening, Indonesia.

I was suppose to fly to Manila in the Philippines today but I changed my plans to come to Bali instead, lucky really as a Typhoon is forming in the north of the Philippines, so I could of been stuck in Manila for a while.
Staying in Kuta tonight which is only 4km from the airport. Arrived late so haven't had chance see my surroundings yet. I do know the beach is only 3 minutes walk from where I'm staying at the Budhi Beach Inn.
Kuta was the town bombed in 2002 by Islamic terrorists from Java. Walked past the monument dedicated to the 200 people that died on that sad day. The monument is really tasteful and list the names and countries of the victims.

Found somewhere to eat in town and had a wander. The place is one big party, haven't been to somewhere like this for quite a while. Looks like most people are here on their holidays, so late nights and lazy days on the beach are probably the norm. I reckon it's not a travellers place at all, I think it's the Australian's equivalent to Ibiza. Will probably get out of here pretty quickly. I'm sharing a room tonight with a French guy I Met in KK. The room is pretty expensive, but it's clean with A/C and hot water, I'm sharing the room costs so it's not so bad. Tomorrow I need to book a ticket to the Gili islands. The Gili's are three small islands off the west coast of volcanic Lombok, will probably stay on the islands for a while to relax and recuperate after a busy couple of months on the road.

Day 165 - 05/08/08

Woke up this morning and had a stroll down to the beach which appears be a complete surfers Mecca. Many many surfers in the water catching some big old reef breaks. Bali and Java are renowned in Asia as the best places to surf on the continent. Several international competitions are held on the famous G-Land peninsula on the south-east coast of Java. The beach in Kuta is beautiful but far to crowded, the surf is crowded too, looks pretty precarious surfing on this beach, saw a few big collisions, ouch!

Kuta is completely tourist driven, every shop is targeted at the holiday makers, can't really see anything remotely related to Indonesian culture here. I've decided to leave tomorrow, don't really want to stay in Kuta longer than I have too. I can completely understand why people come here though, sea, surf, a beautiful beach and hedonistic nights on the town. Not really my cup of tea.

I've booked a travel ticket to Gili Trawangan this afternoon which leaves early tomorrow morning, I plan to relax for a while on this tiny island off the north-west coast of Lombok. Will defiantly be a long travel day tomorrow, was told the journey takes at least 8 hours on various buses and boats.
