In a strange way I've missed efficiency and cleanliness and arriving in Singapore airport has given me my fix, it's been a breath of fresh air. Everything here runs like clockwork, the toilets are clean, the internet is quick, people busy working hard. A complete opposite to the places I've been so far. It was like arriving in an alien world, but a nice, clean and friendly alien world.
Arrived in Phuket this morning and jumped on a bus to Phuket town where I got a taxi to the docks and bought a boat ticket to Ko Phi Phi.
The boat took just over 2 hours to reach Ko Phi Phi. As we approached the island the big cliffs came into view, it was exactly how I pictured the place to look, lush with craggy cliffs and beautiful waters. It's hard to imagine that 2000 people perished on this island in the Tsunami of 2004. Everything has been rebuilt and the only indication that this tragedy happened are the Tsunami escape route signs, lights and sirens telling people what to do and where to go if it happens again. These warnings are certainly a consequence of this awful and harrowing incident.

Getting closer
Hey Christos,

Had a read thru the backlog of the blog. Sorry to hear about you had the typhoid ... man, that's scarry!
I understand too that Himalaya has set high expectations for the rest of your trip, apparently! Hope you'll still enjoy your future visits!

On Singapore, I had the same impression when I passed thru, on my way to NZ: very clean, very tidy. Also now, you're really getting closer to Oceania, aren't you!?

Take care.

Looking forward to NZ too!!
I'm sure NZ will just be as memorable as Nepal Benoit :o) The mountains may not be as epic in size but I'm sure the NZ ranges are equally as impressive but in a different sort of way. Plus I'll have some good company!
