I'm now in country number four on my travels. I've just landed in Kathmandu from Delhi. Now in the home of eight out of ten of the biggest peaks on the planet!
Staying at the Kathmandu Guest house tonight which is in the Thamel district. This guest house was the first to be build in Thamel and everything else just sprung up around it when the masses of tourists began to flow in. It's in a great location and it's probably the best place I've stayed in Asia so far. First impressions about Thamel are; it's a bit like the main bazaar in Delhi but it's cleaner and not as many people hassling you, it's a relaxed vibrant place. Loads of trekking shops selling good quality fake gear, souvenirs, music, all sorts. Also some great bars with excellent live bands. Went to one tonight called Shishma, next to the guest house. There was an excellent band playing a really elicit set of tunes, good night.
Today I've organised a 16 day trek to Everest base camp. I fly to Lukla the day after tomorrow which is a 40 minute flight from Kathmandu, this bypasses Maoist country so I shouldn't have to pay any bribes. There's only going to be me, an Irish guy and three Sherpa's. I nice small group which is the way I like it.
I feel quite guilty, I've taken six flights in less than five weeks, my carbon foot print is going to be as big as small country by the end of the year. I'm going to have to plant a forest the size of Wales to off set it. Looking at it from a selfish point of view I better make the most of it before we all have carbon allowances, it won't be long before this is the case I'm sure.
