Where I stayed
Today the trek involved moving on from Baranco camp to Karanga Camp at 4050m, during the day we would be climbing to 4400m and then dropping back down, around 7 miles in distance. We started by climbing the Baranco wall which was a 200 metre ascent with plenty of scrambling which I really enjoyed, a little bit of hands on stuff was a nice change although quite tiring. Then the rest of the trail to camp was lots of up's and down's over a volcanic and bleak landscape. We arrived at camp at 12.30 after a 3.5 hour hike. Most of the day we were covered by dense cloud and like clockwork the rains began when we arrived at camp. Had some lunch which was probably the best meal I've had so far, carrot soup, chips, coleslaw, chicken and melon. Then went back to the tent to discover leaks and wet sleeping mats. It's rained every day so far and I think the damp tents and clothes are getting to everyone a bit. I knew it would rain but not this much! The cloud and rain finally cleared after sunset and I could see the bright lights of Moshi in one direction and the snow covered summit of Kili in the other, the summit is beginning to look a lot closer now, camp is almost level with the snowline. Going to be cold night, 4 degrees at 8pm, probably will be another below freezing night, but nothing compared with summit day where it will be somewhere between -5 and -15 without the wind chill!
