As is the way in this country nothing is straight forward as I mentioned in the previous entry there had been over a days continuous rain, one of the things that happens is the rivers swell and the structural integrity of bridges are tested.

Well in our case during the previous night a bridge on the southern highway which had previously been washed out by an earlier tropical storm and replaced by a temporary causeway and wooden bridge failed the test and the causeway was washed away.

After some consternation and trying to obtain information as to the state of the river crossing and in the company of a couple of back packers (Lewis and Emma) who required a lift back to the City, we decided to risk coming back to Belize City.  After 1 1/4 hrs on the road we arrived at the crossing a found a large queue of trucks, buses and vans not a good sign.  We parked up and walked down to the crossing and found untypically for this country that the Department of Works were extremely busy repairing the causeway.  After a 2 hr delay the causeway and crossing were open and we were on our way again.

After a refuel stop in Belmopan (the Capital City of Belize) we got back to Belize City after dark with no further incident.  Unfortunately we arrived back after the last water taxi to the Quays so Lewis and Emma had to stop over night in the City.
