Sweltering Heat in Chong Qing
Entry 20 of 167 | show all | print this entry |
2:30pm So I got to Chong Qing right around 12:30, so it took about 5 and a half hours to get here from Chengdu.
It's ridiculously hot here. Apparenlty Chong Qing is one of the 4 "furnace cities" in China, along with Wuhan, where I'll be going after the cruise, yay. I can only hope the boat has some kind of AC.
I was picked up from the bus drop off point by one of the employees of the travel agency. I went ahead and booked the bus ticket from Yichang (the town where the boat ride ends) to Wuhan, the next major town. I also booked my night at the hostel there, and the train for the next day from Wuhan to Guilin, in the Southwest. All of that cost me about another 50 USD.
I braved the heat to go to Carrefour (a French supermarket chain) where I got some instnt noodles and random other junk food for the next few days. I don't really feel like walking around in the insane heat, but I'll probably make a quick run back to eat at the KFC to have my (probably) last decent meal in a few days.
9:40pm So I've been relaxing on my bunk on the boat for a couple of hours or so now. We should tke off at 11:00pm. I'm still the only one here, but I'm sure the others will get here soon since it's still early.
I just poured the hot water from the room's hot water bottle for my noodles, which I'll munch on after I finish writing this entry. I must say, thouh, that (so far) I'm impressed with the cheaper "3rd class" acomodations. Sure, it's a bit small perhaps for 6 people, the bunks are a bit hard, and the shower isn't the biggest in the world, but hey... at least we have our own bathroom and shower. It may not be the prettiest shower I've seen, but it's a shower. And on top of that, we have our self-controllwd AC-score! AND a 3 channel (all in Chinese, of course) small TV. Wow, talk about lifestyles of the rich and the famous! haha...
But seriously, it's definitely ok for me, and unless you like high class acomodations for double the price, it should work fin for most people out there. One word of warning - it seems noone speaks a word ofEnglish on the boat.
I just hoep my roommates are as friendly as the ones in my previous experiences.
10:40pm So, of course, my roommates are great. They're a reallky nice family. There's the grandparents, mom and dad, and the 14 year old son. The son speaks a tiny amount of Enlish, but other than that, we've been having a good time. I'm glad I'm lucky enough to share the room with them.
