Today I got up around 8am or so, and was relaxing for a bit, waiting for 11am, which I thought was the time where the monks at the Sao Bento Monastery sang along to mass there. I could've sworn I'd read it somewhere, but, just to make sure, I found there website and checked the time. Apparently the mass was at 10am and not 11am, and being that it was 9am, and it took a fair bit of time to get there, I got my ass in high gear and left right away.
I walked the 10 or so minutes over to Cantagalo (singing rooster) Metro station, got off at Uruguaiana station, and made my way to the Monastery. After walking up the (what seemed at the time) treacherous hill to the church, I entered a couple of minutes late and enjoyed the singing. It was quite nice, but the Church was *absolutely* fantastic. I think one of the most beautiful I've ever seen, with practically every wall carved out of wood, with Angel faces, carvings, paintings, and other beautiful art.
After hanging out for mass to listen to the Gregorian Chanting, and taking a million pictures, I headed back out onto the streets, and wandered around, making my way towards another big Church I had seen on the way. That was the Church of the Candelaria, which, if possible, was even more beautiul than Sao Bento Monastery. Beautiful vitral art on the windows, fantastic wooden carvings, huuuge, tall, beautifully painted ceilings.. I could go on and on.
I then continued down the street and stumbled upon a few different art and history expositions, including the Banco do Brasil history with some interesting old artifacts, and a Rubens' school exposition which was quite nice as well. After seeing these expositions, and a few others, and being quite tired, after walking around for about 6 or 7 hours by that time, I headed back to the nearest Metro statino (Carioca), and headed back to Copacabana.
Having acquired and ingested my delicious "Salgados" (croissants stuffed with, in my case, ham and cheese) and coke, as per usual, I passed out for an hour or so, and here I am now.. Contemplating heading out again or something... Seeya next time...
