Where I stayed
Nong Mam didn't pick me up at the
hotel. By the way the term Nong is used in Thai for younger
sibblings, whereas Pi is used for older sibblings. Since we are close
friends, it's not unusual for Thai custom to call each other PiNong.
Instead she called me and asked me if I
could come to Ekkamai Major. Ekkamai is just 1 stop by BTS, so it's
fairly easy to get there.
Arriving at the BTS station Ekkamai I
asked my way for Ekkamai Major, pronouncing it a very Thai way, which sounds hilarious but at least they understand
Ekkamai Major is one of Bangkok's big Cineplex cinemas. First I
wasn't too enthusiastic about watching a movie but I appreciated that
she wanted to spend some time with me.
Once I got there I didn't wait long
until we met. Swe had a look at the program and shesuggested a Thai
drama. called ช้วฟ้าดินสลาย, which means "until eternity".
I was a little bit suspicious because
most Thai movies are crap, but I was ok with everything. Buying the
tickets we had almost an hour left so we had dinner together.
The movie was in Thai with English
subtitles, so it was ideal for me. It was a love drama and turned
out to be a real masterpiece: great plot, good actors and beautiful
Luck instantly after the movie, she was worried because I hadn't been
available by mobile for 2 hours:)
I thanked Mam for that nice evening and
went back home the way I came, whereas she took a bus.
Had another beer on my room and went to
sleep. Next morning I had breakfast and checked out of my hotel
quckly as I wanted to arrive in Phitsanulok early. I took a taxi on
the Express way to Mo Chit bus station and i was lucky that the VIP
bus was about to leave in 10 minutes. So I bought a ticket and asked
my way at the 7/11 nearbly.
A young lady working there did not only
tell me where to go, she went there with me even carrying my
because of it's amazingly friendly people.
So I got on the bus and it turned out
to be a real VIP bus worth the extra charge: the seats were big,
there was a toilet on board and we were provided with rice, water,
sweets and iced coffee.
If I say we, I mean the other
passengers and me. I was the only farang (westerner)of course but I don't mind
at all. Tourists like to stick together, they either take a flight,
take one of those tourist buses that run from one tourist area to
another (where you won't find a single Thai) or take an overnight
sleeper train because they read in a guidebook that it's comfortable-
which is true.
I couldn't believe we left exactly at
10 am, no delay this can't be Thailand!
The 5 hour bus ride to Phitsanulok
turned out to be a real comfortable journey being provided with food
and beverages, plus we had a 15 minute stop halfway at Nakhon Sawan
By 3am I arrived in time at
Phitsanulok. Got off the bus and took a Tuk-Tuk to the LiThai guest
house. I had checked several hotels and guesthouses on the net in
advance and this one had quite good reviews and was reasonably
The room is spacious, clean and fully
furnitured. Air-conditioning (thank God I found out how to adjust it
after 1 night freezing or feeling hot), fridge, TV, but and wifi on
Downstairs they provide their guest
with free LAN , so at least there is Internet, access, with my own
netbook too. Furthermore it's free!
Breakfast is also included- all for 460
Meanwhile Luck called several times
skipped her idea of picking me up with the motorbike at the bus
station since I had a backpack and a suitcase. How to hold that
including myself on a motorbike with just one hand? Silly idea.
Though the Tuk- Tuk was a little expensive, it was worth every single
We appointed to meet at my guesthouse
once she finished work at 4:30 pm. I was down at the lobby since I
wanted to find out about the Internet. By 16:45 I decided to call
her, within 15 minutes you can get almost anywhere in the city on a
motorbike and her office is pretty close. Calling her I saw a
beautiful, stylish Thai lady opposite the lobby. She turned around
holding a mobile in her hand: It was Luck!
She looked gorgeous, i saw her new
haircut the day before on webcam but in real it looked much better
was quite short and looked very stylish. Welcoming me she complained
I got taller than last year, which of course isn't true. I'm just a
regular-sized farang and she's quite a small lady even for Thai
She liked the room that I stayed and I
was happy to hug her- God how I missed that! We haven't seen each
other for 16 long months but she still felt familiar.
We decided to walk around and had dinner
together at a restaurant nearby, which was very delicious. We walked
past the night market, which was pretty busy. I already liked
Phitsanulok, it seemed a really typical Thai city. Not that big but
with everything that a city needs to have. We walked to the train
station which is actually all very close. I bought something at a
small shop there and the elderly Thai lady mentioned the word
„acciden"t in Thai. I told her that I had a stroke and no accident.
That surprised her a lot. Again this was one of the situation that
speaking Thai not only helps but is the key to their heart
me if I did anything myself against it. Luck answered for me that I
had exercise like 2 or 3 times a week. The lady got almost angry and
said I needed to do every day. When I said that I needed to work as
well and didn't have time for that she simply asked me whether I have
time to eat oir not. She became very vigurous about it. She was a
lovely lady though. It turned out she was 80 years old already, which
you wouldn't guess. I thought she was about 70.
Shewas very fit , showing me the
exercise she did every day to keep in shape. Unlike other old people
her back was not bent at all but very straight. She tried me to do
her exercise which didn't work out. But again it was another nice
encounter with Thai people.
It was either too cold or too hot at night, but by now I found out
how to adjust the air-conditioning.
I had breakfast this morning, write
this blog entry on my room and will publish it downstairs in the
lobby. In about an hour Luck is going to pick me up for lunch:)
