April 30th 2006

Day One

Left Cheers at around 11 am. Smooth ride to the border.  We had no problems crossing the border. The woman who processed the papers for Jack's Car was very helpful and nice. We found out that you can get car insurance in Guatemala but you have to buy it in the bank and they probably won't sell for less than 6 months worth. As it was Sunday today and it's a holiday tomorrow, Jack said it hardly seems worth it to try on Tuesday. Except for the loose horse that insisted on walking out in front of Jack's car and was narrowly avoided I would tend to agree. Very rough from the border for the first 30 kms and paved road after that. We bottomed out a few times on the horrendous tumelos (speed bumps) placed in various villages, and suspiciously under the shade of trees so as to be invisible. I have a feeling that tumelos in Guatemala jump much as pine trees do in the Mountain Pine Ridge of Belize. (poss relation???)

Almost exactly 100 miles from Cheers to the Tikal turnoff. Only 2 pm so on to Rio Dulce.
