So, I will try to make this one fast as I want to catch up and document the trip but also want to head down to the Lagoon in Cairns to enjoy the afternoon at the pool at the beach here in Cairns.

So, Sunday morning we got up early and got a car from Hertz for a 2 day venture down the Great Ocean Road.  Look it up.. a great drive along the coast from Melbourne similar to the coastal drive from Monterrey to San Luis Opisbo  Take a look at the pics to check it out.. unfortunately it rained on and off most of the time so the pics weren't as good as they could be but still some amazing scenery and a great time down the coast.  First stopped at Bell's Beach -  a world famous surfing spot.  Great swells from time to time as it was stormy which typically brings good waves.  Watched the surfers and just stared at the ocean for a bit.  Real mellow and relaxing.  It was great to be away from the city for awhile. Best part was hangin' on the beach with some guy's dog that was just patiently waiting for him to come in.  Eventually he came in boogie board style on his surfboard and whistled for the dog.  The dog ran perfectly to where the guy came in from the surf, grabbed his ankle leash from his board and lead him back to his car to go home.   Very cool.  Definitely made me miss the weiner dogs.

Next we headed west along the coast to hit a few beach towns.  Reminded me a bit of home.. hitting beach town after beach town every 20 km or so.  Very relaxed and chatting it up all the way.  We hit Lorne for a quick bite to eat and beer and then Apollo Bay.  Looked into staying in Apollo Bay but decided to push through to the Lighthouse at Cape Otway with koalas and kangaroos all around.... see pics to get a good feel.  Next, onto 12 Apostles/ Loch and Gorge for sunset. Both somewhat famous landmarks.  All beautiful, but freezing in the pounding rain and wind at each of these points.  Well worth it though and made it more fun in a weird way.  Absolutely stunning views at each of the stops and even just looking out the window on the drive along the ocean road.  Now, it's getting late and onto lodging in Port Campbell.

Made it into town around 9pm fairly tired from a full days drive.  We found a hostel immediately in town right on the bay at Port Campbell.  Walked up to see about rooms but had to go to a different motel to check availability and actually get a room.  No problem, arrow to the left leading us to the other motel, we'll check it out.  Start walking and a block and 1/2 later Makely is convinced it can't be this far away and started to head back to the hostel and car.  I figure I will head to the end of the street and then head back if I find nothing.  A bit more up the road I see a sign that stays "Hostel" and call Makely back.  We go in, looks nice enough from the outside, clean and quiet and end up booking a room for $23AUS a night.  The place is dead as people are out and about at this time so we go back to the car, get our stuff and drop off it off at the hostel.  We are starting to get a bit worried about getting some dinner as it is Sunday in a small town and Makely knows that it can be a bit "dodgy" finding open places at this time in Australia.  So, we walk back toward the first hostel to a restaurant/bar that we saw nearby to see about dinner.  Well... we walk past the first hostel on the way to the restaurant, and there is a huge bay window to the lounge that looks out onto the water inlet....Makely and I are obviously curious about this other hostel that we initially tried to book.  Look in and there is a party happening at this other place.  It was a simultaneous jaw drop from Makely and I.  Guy, girl, girl, guy, girl, girl, then to one of the sofas where there was girl, girl, girl, girl in a massage train.... everyone inside laughing, partying and sharing beers.  Makely and I look at each other and immediately can't believe our eyes...2 single guys dream for a hostel.... full of single girls and all of them in a massage train drinking beer for christ sake, yet we're at the barren and desolate Bates Motel around the corner.  Great!  This situation as you can imagine become the butt of Makely and I's jokes for the next 2 hours as we are dying laughing at our bad luck and "crazy times" for this adventure around the world.  Our imaginations run wild with jokes about naked yoga in the morning at the "other" hostel, Hanz and Deter doing sit-ups in thongs to techno music in our room at out hostel, and porno-esque scenarios of our manliness at the first hostel.  If you know Makely and I, this went on for hours, each of us crying laughing at our misfortune over beers and pizza.   In our misfortune, we had a great time laughing hysterically, but this was only the beginning....

I need to go to sleep and prepare for 3 days of diving tomorrow on the Great Barrier Reef so this story will have to be continued later after diving....  you can check out the pics in the mean time.

Adios for now - CMB

Back from the dive.... awesome... new entry for it coming soon.

Where was I with this Makely and I head back from dinner to check out the Bates Motel.  We pick up a 6 pack from a bar nearby and take it back to the hostel.  We walk in and there are several people hanging around the kitchen and lounge areas.  All young - laughing and having a good time.  This isn't so bad.  So Makely and I saddle up to the counter at the kitchen and crack open a beer.  3 girls and 1 guy are there chatting.  At this point, Makely and I turn into the pinball wizard - deaf, dumb and blind.  We sit there like idiots while we are promptly ignored by everyone as they party all around us.   Crazy times to be had by Makely and I.  Again, we start laughly hysterically at our retardedness.  Apparently, all Makely and I's social skills at NIMO and with friends have completely vanished.  Makely goes out to smoke a cigarette and I happen to catch a glimpse of him outside by himself buckled over laughing at our predicament.  I say, f it all and start talking to the 3 girls at the counter as the guy has gone to bed.  One was nice enough to chat for about 5 minutes while the other 2 look at me like I'm a leper.  I then get the stretch and yawn...time for bed... very smooth....  Makely comes back and we continue to laugh practically in tears at times.  Eventually the group from the lounge next door come into the kitchen and we manage to slightly redeem ourselves and hang out for a bit as a game of "I never" continues.  Chatting up this tour group of kids that is staying there that night.  This eventually turns into flip a coin and call it... if you guess right, you are fine and pass the coin.  If you are wrong you have to pound a beer.  Needless to say, this group proceeds to get completely hammered in a matter of minutes and continues throughout the night, howling and screaming.... good to be young and carefree... but that was not the 2 old and socially retarded travelers that were asleep at their first hostel stop of the trip.... crazy times ahead.... CRAZY!
