While we hiked to and from Marbella Beach last evening, we noticed that there didn't seem to be any "adopt-a-beach" or other clean up programs to remove debris likely from the cruise ships or the mainland Honduras, that washed ashore from the shoreline past our resort's beach. It could be because we were quite isolated from "civilization" on this side of the island, and most of the beach front seemed to be owned by individual property owners.  The beach did not feel dirty, and the debris did not overshadow the raw beauty, but it was noticeable and unfortunate.  With just a little bit of maintenance, the beach would be pristine.  Michelle set out to do her part.  Armed with every trash bag in our villa, she retraced our steps from the prior evening picking up all she could.  We spent the remainder of the morning exploring the Palmetto Bay Plantation admiring the amazing flora, and photographing the lizards, butterflies, crabs, and hummingbirds.

  The previous night, a waitress had told us about a local women in the next town that makes amazing key lime pies.  Always up for local flavors...and a good pie, we headed for Crawfish Rock, about a mile walk west from our resort. Observing the locals was like stepping back in time.  Women washed clothes in the ocean, toddlers bathed in metal barrels, the homes were simple made from cinder blocks without glass windows.  Most of the town is supported in some way by the resort, so although it was as obvious as the sky is blue that we were tourists, the locals were very friendly in directing us to the yellow house on stilts with lime trees around back.  We were greeted by Dolcia Conner.   Dolcia, meaning "sweet", is well known in these parts for her cooking and baking.  She welcomed us into her home and we were presented with a meringue topped Key Lime pie still warm from the oven.  She pulled out her personal dishes and silverware and sat us at her  dining room table.  The flaky homemade crust and fresh key lime filling were magnificent!  As we ate, we talked about island life, her family, and Crawfish Rock, the town she has lived in all her life.  Michelle attempted to squeeze in some practice speaking Spanish with her, but she ended up feeling quite sheepish when Dolcia informed us that the locals actually speak English.  This is because Roatan was originally populated by freed slaves from the British Island of Grand Cayman.  When slavery was banned on Grand Cayman, the former slave owners banished the former slaves to the deserted island of Roatan.  Lucky for the new inhabitants, Roatan turned out to be a tropical paradise and a pretty cool place.  So in order to practice Spanish, we would have to run into some mainlanders, known as "Spaniards".  The experience was truly a special moment that only occurs when one veers from the cruise ship/resort atmosphere.  Dolcia invited us to stay for lunch when her son would be bringing a group of tourists by after a fishing excursion, but who could think about lunch after eating half a pie!  We looked her up after we returned and found that she was featured on several travel/food blogs such as Food Gypsy, but has no phone number or website, so getting to her is quite the special treat, but we already knew that!  We explored the rest of Crawfish Rock before heading back to Palmetto Bay for a well desired nap. 

We awoke refreshed and once again headed to the resort restaurant for dinner.  We saw Brent and Julie and joined them at their table.  Dinner was delicious, again. We also managed to drain the bar of our favorite local cerveza, Salva Vida.  The company and conversation was so good that the staff ended up showing us where to shut the lights off once we decided to retire from the restaurant's patio.

Em, It is forever burned into my brain! Was one of those times, we felt like we should put the camera away unfortunately. All I can say is that it looked as good as it tasted!
