Where I stayed
The drive down the one way Bourbon street to our hotel was stressful for me, with people just casually walking\staggering in the streets while being stuck behind a massive street cleaning truck. Thankfully it's only 10am, i can't imagine how mental it would be to try and negotiate driving around here later in the day.
With the car safely tucked away in the hotel car park, and our bags stored with the bell man we set out to experience what New Orleans had to offer. Stepping out from our clean and tranquil hotel lobby onto Bourbon street, really is a shock to the system
It feels like we have stepped into war zone. One in which a battle has recently been waged, with the walking wounded staggering around, while the victims from last night are all tucked up in their beds sleeping off their injuries. Well if you can't beat them, i guess you have to join them. Pretty much everyone we had spoken to about New Orleans had mentioned two places, Pat O'Briens and Cafe Du Monde. Pat O'Briens was only a few steps from our hotel so we ticked that one off our to do list. Pat O'Briens is definitely a step or two up from most of the bars around here, with a beer garden in the back and a piano bar inside. We sat in the garden where i had a breakfast consisting of a bloody mary (This is one drink Pat's is known for) and Abita Amber the local beer of choice. Les opted for a Margarita to start her day.
Refreshed our next stop was Deanie's Seafood which is one of the restaurants featured on the New Orleans Man vs Food tv show. We split a BBQ Shrimp to start followed by a shrimp PoBoy (Deep Fried shrimp sandwich) and a cup of seafood gumbo. The BBQ shrimp was definitely the star of the show.
Finally got into our hotel room at 4pm. Freshened up and headed back out onto the street. This time we got off the craziness of Bourbon st and onto the far more calmer Frenchman Street. This had been a tip from one of Leslie's old school friends who now lives in NOLA, and it was a good one. We sat in a bar and watched our beloved niners get robbed of a place in the Superbowl while listening to a bloke playing the violin, guitar and harmonica
I think we were in bed before 11? Let's see how the old head feels tomorrow.
