Where I stayed
John and Marianne's
Once we crossed the border, we drove through Montana enjoying the countryside. We had dinner in Bozeman, a really nice town at a great burger place I believe was called Bobs Place. There was a sign on the door that immediately attracted us saying sorry, we are open and on signage inside they pledge to give same day service!
It was a basic, but tasty dinner and we headed out to meet our hosts, John and Marianne who we surprised by arriving a day before they expected us. They had only arrived back from a weekend away and rushed around getting things ready for us
They live on a beautiful 20 acre block with 5 horses, 2 cats and a corgi, as well as a new addition being a cute 12 week old Corgi pup, full of energy. They have four kids, aged 13, 11 9 and four and the kids had so much fun playing and hanging out with them.
We spent some time at home, we had our own loft apartment with a large lounge downstairs where the kids slept. The weather in Montana was perfect, warm days and then lovely cool evenings.
We enjoyed trying out another restaurant in town and found it to be one of apparently many where the food and service were excellent.
One day we headed off to check out the ghost town Virginia City. This was the former capital of Montana. It was an interesting place even though it was very touristy and we enjoyed a cute little train road to the neighbouring ghost town of Nevada City. Virginia City was where there were numerous hangings in the 1800s as the rivalry between the Vigilantes and the Road Agents spilled over.
Zack surprised us with a huge blood nose on his way home and we had to stop and pull over to get him out of the van. It was really intense. He managed an encore later in the day back at home and it appears it was a major reaction to the altitude (we were around 5,000-6,000 feet above sea level).
The kids had fun learning some of the skills of American Football and Samantha enjoyed taking on the boys in a game of two on two. (no question she could hold her own!)
On our last day we enjoyed a trip to Yellowstone National Park. Clare was on the lookout for Yogi the bear and Boo Boo but I had to remind her that that was Jellystone Park. We were amazed to see a Buffalo walking down the highway in our lane (not sure of the US road rules in this situation but we used our indicators and carefully passed it). These buffalos are massive! We also enjoyed seeing the Old Faithful Geyser and thermal area and could have spent longer in the park, but the kids were desperate to get back and have a final play with the kids in Bozeman.
We got packed that evening and headed off early for our long drive to Rapid City in South Dakota.
