We faced a long 13 hour drive from Yellowstone, the last of our national parks, to get back over to the west coast, Washington State, the destination being Seattle where we were going to be meeting up for the very last time with alana and jamie before going our separate ways.  Both a parting and a meeting on the horizon as Michael was due to meet us in Seattle.  Brave 12 year old flying out on his own to the home of grunge, Nirvana and Pearl Jam.  (And he did get the t shirt! to prove it).

So we stuck another pin in another map and chose a place called Wallace for an overnight stop. We must be good at sticking pins in maps (or pin the tail on the donkey, remember?)  because we struck gold again with this one.  Wallace turned out to be a characterful little town  which looked like a film set from a cowboys and Indians film.  But instead of horses and wagons in this cowboy and Indian film set there were off road vehicles, all terrain vehicles, 4 x 4's and pre 1990 vehicles!  As we sat outside on the one and only Main Street for our dinner that evening, every car that passed fell into one of these categories.  Apart from the obvious odd stranger in town who rode in on a brand new hire car.  And when I say every car that passed, we are talking one car every 5 or 10 minutes or so.  And they were all driven by big macho men in vests.   There was not a lot going down in Wallace but we loved its quirkiness.   There was even an open air lido .... Empty of course

It seems that all these Wallacers make their way up the mountains and go off-roading along the tracks up there, some of which are no more than little mud tracks.  There were signs for zip lines, sky dives and speed boats nearby so it seems that Wallace is not the quiet nothing to do place it appears to be!  Surprises everywhere.

And so, reflecting on our US adventures coming to a rapid end now, we hit the road again heading west ready for a whole new chapter with our journey into Canada ahead of us.
