They built this railway in 1890ish so that they could mobilise troops without having to cross into Switzerland (who of course were neutral). Because of the mountains though it had to go along a strange 26 mile route (including doing a spiral inside a hill) so that could cover 10 miles as the crow flies. the Germans call it the "piggy tail railway" for obvious reasons
