We have now travelled to Blenheim through the usual beautiful countryside. Blenheim itself was rather a souless place but it is situated among the vines and we took a guided wine tour which proved to be a most enjoyable trip.
We were picked up at ten a.m. and had another couple join us with their little daughter. He was an English banker working in New York and she was NY born and bred and sat in the front of the van, whilst Dad looked after Hermoney. We started off at Villa Maria and tried five or six of their finest, then moved on to Matua, Mahi, Bladen - a small producer of some very nice wine, Spy Valley, Kathy Lyndsey and then had lunch at Wairau River Winery. By that time Chris and I were quite jolly and were grateful for the food to soak up some of the wine. We hadn't drunk it glass after glass by any means, but were feeling the need for a rest. After that we went to Seresin Estate, an organic winery and their wine too was very good. Our fellow travellers were really into their wine and were ordering wines that they couldn't get in the states. Shipping costs to the UK are about GBP 75, so quite high in addition to the cost of the wine itself. Gary, our driver, was very informative and amusing, so we had a really good day out. Ours was supposed to be a half day tour and we could have stayed on but by the time we had visited the last winery, we no longer knew or cared what we were drinking! For once I was pleased to get back to the darkened van for a rest. Off to Kaikoura tomorrow.
