The Carolina's and Virginia seem very nice places and worth a visit to explore, a definate 7. I wanted to go in search of the Blue Ridge Mountains but they were too far. The area's history is linked to the Confederacy Battles between the Blue's and the Grey's and there are many famous Battlegrounds to visit. (We still don't know who won). We went to a battleground near the St. James' river where John Smith saved the town by attacking the navel force as they tried to come down the river
We had intended to follow the coast through to New York but best laid plans and all that found us heading towards Washington DC. We took back roads to look for cotton and mellon growing fields, Chris says he saw mellons but I don't know what he was referring to! We did see tobacco, sweetcorn and potato fields though, it was real redneck country.
Driving into Washington is fairly easy, you can't drive too near to the state buildings so it is best to stay a little way out and the metro is quite reasonable and easy to use. Directions and information isn't all it could be, so do your research and make sure you know what you want to ask and where you want to go.
The Whitehouse and the other state buildings are well protected and we were moved on not long after we got to the Whitehouse. There are police, security and the forces everywhere. You are searched and asked for identifcation, even to get in the shops! It is a typical City with elegant buildings, which house the powers that be. There is an John Kennedy attraction where the arts perform for free, we saw Jazz players, there is a timetable and it seems you just turn up.
There is a long strip where all the major attractions are and it is possible to hire a bike to view everything, but make sure you get a good map!
We saw grave-yards, museums, memorials, statue's Capitol building, the Pentagon and other stuff
We seem to have hit the busy side of America, we now travel for hundreds of miles on roads full of traffic, we went into Philledephia to run up the Rocky steps, but got lost, couldn't find parking or a hotel and ended up back on the road to New York, so we are taking a break to organise ourselves for the Big Apple.
So far we have missed the rain and storms.... by the way what's the weather like at home.....
